Women and girls play a critical role in advancing both peace and development.
Research shows that families, communities and nations prosper when girls have the opportunity to participate fully in every aspect of society. Empower Peace’s Women2Women International Leadership Program (W2W) builds a network of promising young women (ages 15-19) from around the globe, engages them in the issues that define their lives and provides them with the tools, relationships and opportunities required to lead.
In June 2009, Women2Women held its first Alumnae Conference in Amman, Jodan. Participants from the first three years were invited to apply to attend the conference. The Women2Women alumnae were asked how the W2W conference impacted their lives and what they had done in their respective countries since they returned home.
Held in Amman, Jordan the Women2Women Alumnae Conference had 50 young women from 12 countries attend the conference. Delegates came from Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uzbekistan.
The Conference took place from June 26, 2009 thrugh July 2, 2009. The delegates attended workshops on Turning Ideas into Action and civic education. W2W held its 1,000 Voices for the Furture Broadcast from the Coumbia University Middle East Research Center in Jordan, a videoconference on the status of women and girls worldwide. Hundreds of viewers world-wide tuned into the live event that was streamed over the internet.
Through a series of community service projects, speakers, interactive workshops and panels, the delegates were given an opportunity to broaden their perspectives, build relationships and engage in "Leadership in Action" in this next step toward becoming influential women of today and tomorrow. Delegates put their leadership skills into action at the SOS Childrens Village in Irbid and at the Queen Rania Family and Child Center in Amman.
Our delegates also helped with the Empower Peace Global Village, an event held in Amman for Jordanian youth between the ages of 14-19. The event featured Her Excellency Hala Latouf, the Minister of Social Development in Jordan and NGO representatives from all around Jordan. Jordanian youth were able to visit the different NGOs and volunteer their time for civic engagement programs.
