Empower Peace was created in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Empower Peace is a worldwide, coordinated grassroots program designed to educate, motivate, and empower high school-aged youth to learn about, share in, and encourage the promotion of peace, mutual respect and cultural understanding between young people living in the United States and the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Empower Peace seeks to bridge the gap between high school students in the United States and Arab and Muslim countries through educational leadership conferences and the utilization of state of the art internet-based technologies including video-conferencing, interactive web casting and other internet-based collaborative platforms.

Using these cutting-edge communication technologies that enable classrooms in any corner of the planet to connect and communicate, Empower Peace's goal is to build a worldwide network of students, teachers, and schools committed to breaking down barriers and misconceptions through dialogue and the open expression of ideas.

Empower Peace offers an invaluable mechanism for educators to expose their students “firsthand” to people, countries, and cultures that they otherwise would experience only through schoolbooks.

Empower Peace creates interactive and thoughtful discussions among high school-aged youth worldwide using videoconferencing, the Internet, and Internet video streaming on the Empower Peace website. Internet video streaming enables schools to view the virtual cultural exchanges live as each broadcast occurs or to view the discussion at a later date via the Internet.

To date, we estimate that more than 50,000 high school students from 140 classrooms in 31 countries from six continents already have participated in or viewed Empower Peace broadcasts. Additionally, Empower Peace programming has been broadcast via television to over 600 million people in over 100 countries to date through our global television broadcast partners.

Once relationships with distant classrooms have been established, students are invited to build upon their new friendships at the Empower Peace web site. Here, they are encouraged to participate in interactive activities between broadcasts, to view and participate in future Empower Peace exchanges, and to continue their communication with their new friends via a “message board” pen pal program and various Empower Peace collaborative programs. We understand the importance of retaining student interest in the program. Empower Peace strives to create programs that are interesting and educational for students.
